National powerlifting competition taking place in Richmond

More than 400 athletes are vying for a spot in this year's competition.

More than 400 powerlifting athletes from across the country are gathering in Richmond this week.

The 2023 Canadian Powerlifting Union (CPU) National Championship is being hosted at the Sheraton Vancouver International Airport hotel from Feb. 13 to 18 where 441 athletes are vying for a spot in the national team, for their respective age divisions.

Medals will be presented to the first, second and third place in each weight class as well as awards be given to the best lifter in the open, masters, junior, sub-junior and bench press categories.

A separate award will be given to the best provincial team.

The schedule for the competition is as follows:

Monday, Feb. 13

  • Paralympics / Special Olympics
  • Equipped 3-Lift - Male and Female (all age and weight categories)

Tuesday, Feb. 14

  • Unequipped 3-Lift - Master Male and Female (all age and weight categories)

Wednesday, Feb. 15

  • Unequipped Bench Press Only - Male and Female (all age and weight categories)
  • Unequipped 3-Lift - Sub-Juniors - Male and Female (all age and weight categories / Junior Male (up to 83kg) and Female (all weight categories)

Thursday, Feb. 16

  • Unequipped 3-Lift - Junior Male (93kg and up) and Open Women (63kg to 84+kg)

Friday, Feb. 17

  • Equipped Bench Press Only - Male and Female (all age and weight categories)
  • Unequipped 3-Lift - Open Male (59kg to 83kg) and Open Female (47kg to 57kg)

Saturday, Feb. 18

  • Unequipped 3-Lift - Open Male (93kg to 120+kg)
