Richmond’s David Lin concluded the table tennis competition at the Canada Winter Games in Red Deer with his second bronze medal — this time in men’s singles.
The Steveston-London Secondary Grade 12 student defeated Quebec’s Tommy Xu 3-1 (3-11, 11-5, 13-11, 11-7). Earlier in the week he also reached the podium in the team event.
Steve Wang captured gold with a straight set win over Quebec’s Edward Ly — capping an impressive week for Team BC that produced seven medals.
“You come here and aim to win, so to have two women and two men in the finals was amazing. I am incredibly proud of my boys. It was amazing how much the athletes grew this week. As a coach, I learned a tremendous amount this week and I am proud of the team,” said coach Zhenyu Qi.
Captained by Richmond’s Hailey Takasaki, BC just missed out on a podium finish in ringette — falling 6-4 to Manitoba in the bronze medal game on Friday.
Takasaki, a Richmond Ringette alumni who is now in her rookie season with the National Ringette League’s B.C. Thunder, scored twice and finished the tournament with nine goals.
BC sits fourth in the medal standings with 28. Quebec is setting the pace with 85.
Richmond athletes will be competing this coming week in badminton, figure skating, squash, judo and women's hockey.
