Spring is in the air, and that can only mean one thing — the Richmond Roadrunners Junior “B” Tier One lacrosse team’s season has arrived.

The team is expected to have a strong 2019 campaign, led by captain Josh Bourne — who also thrives on the ice as a member of the B.C. Hockey League’s Nanaimo Clippers. Other key returning players include Brock Jung (Team China Field Lacrosse) Jacob Lorenz (Quest University) , Jordan Roberts ( SFU Field Lacrosse ), Justin Preston, Kyle Ahfield, Ryan Jensen (University of Regina Football ), Justin Morishita, Teagan Docherty, Ben Spare, Chad Lore, Stuart Ahara, Erik Kalmbach and Finnish import goalie Riku Jokela ( Team Finland).

Newcomers include: Tyler Moxin (Drafted by New West Jr. A), Liam O’Connor (Jr A)  , Jaden Bourne (Drafted by Nanaimo Timberman Jr. A) , Thomas Dickinson, Jacob Stuart, Jake Spare and Jayden Leach ( Drafted by Burnaby Jr. A).

Richmond opened its regular season schedule with a 12-5 loss on April 25 in Port Coquitlam and will be looking to rebound with a visit to historic Queen’s Park Arena on Friday to take on the New West Salmonbellies. It’s then the home opener Sunday when the Victoria Shamrocks come to Minoru Arenas for a 3 p.m. face-off.

Admission is free and there is a beer garden opening at 2 p.m. that will be run by Britannia Brewery based out of Steveston Village. Richmond Lacrosse tyke teams will be playing during the intermission and other events will also going on throughout the afternoon, along with a few door prizes.

The team is still waiting for more players to trickle back from their school commitments but should be close to full strength for Sunday’s game.

Neil Doddridge returns for his second season behind the bench as head coach. He is joined by homegrown standout Jordan Gilles — a member of the National Lacrosse League’s Colorado Mammoth. Evan Hunt rounds out the coaching staff.
