Richmond's JN Burnett junior boys volleyball has taken home the Richmond City Championships trophy on Thursday night.

The team beat the McMath Wildcats in a five-set match on November 3, with Burnett's Ethan Lau receiving MVP.

Head coach Ian Simpson praised the team for putting on an exciting game in front of a home crowd for the first time in three years. The COVID-19 pandemic has put a halt to many local sports since 2019.

“Richmond finals was their goal as a team so their focus was really controlled around this game," said Simpson.

"They practiced to beat the best teams and expect the best teams and that is exactly what happened.”

This year's win means more for the junior team as the school's bantam and juvenile teams placed second in last year's Richmond finals, according to team captain Ryan Yu.

“It felt good to win because I’ve seen the ups and downs of this team and how we faced many challenges," said Yu.

"After both teams came second last year, we were able to come together and came through as one team.”

Burnett and other Richmond schools will be hosting the junior boys South Fraser Volleyball Competition next week.
