Eight city players earn all-star honours in last-ever Lower Mainland Championships

Grade 11 forward Hudson Swain was named a First Team All-Star for the runner-up MacNeill Ravens at the Lower Mainland 3A Championships.

City teams and players were recognized at the final edition of the Lower Mainland 2A and 3A Boys Basketball Championships at the Richmond Olympic Oval.

The MacNeill Ravens and Steveston-London Sharks both earned berths into this week’s BC 3A Championships at the Langley Events Centre with second and fourth place finishes respectively.

The Ravens capped a memorable week at the Oval with a 78-59 loss to top ranked Charles Tupper in Friday’s title game.

MacNeill actually enjoyed a 37-34 halftime lead thanks to 10 points each from Usman Tung and Tanner Devlin. However, the Tigers took control with a 20-2 third quarter run and never looked back.

The loss did little to tarnish a historic playoff run for a Ravens program that earned its first-ever senior provincial berth They have earned the No. 6 seed and will take on No. 11 Robert Bateman of Abbotsford  at 10 a.m. when the 16-team tournament tips-off on Wednesday.

The Sharks capped a terrific week with an 81-75 loss to No. 5 ranked Byrne Creek in the third place game.

Steveston-London locked up its trip to the LEC with back-to-back impressive wins over St. Thomas More and Richmond High after beginning the Lower Mainland playoffs as the No. 8 seed in the 12-team event. The Sharks have been seeded 12th at the LEC and take on No. 5 GW Graham of Chilliwack at 4:30 p.m.

In the 2A Mainland playoffs, the Hugh Boyd Trojans saw their fine season end with an 85-69 loss to St. Pat’s in the third place game.

The Trojans made huge strides this season and will be a force next year with a number of key Grade 11s returning.

Cambie saw its season end with a 74-61 loss to St. Pat’s in the quarter-finals.

Richmond teams will be part of the new South Fraser Zone next year with Surrey and Delta as BC School Sports expands the number of zones in Greater Vancouver from two to four.

3A Tournament All-Stars

First Team: Hudson Swaim (MacNeill), Usman Tung (MacNeill), Ethan Wight (Steveston-London).

Second Team: Marco Wong (Steveston-London), Jackson Thackwray (MacNeill), Anton Poburko (Richmond High).

2A Tournament All-Stars

Second Team: Nicholas Berda (Hugh Boyd), Payton Hinds (Hugh Boyd).
