The Richmond News filed several freedon-of-information requests throughout the year to the city in a bid to find answers about the massively delayed new Minoru pool.

Year in Review – March:

A new seniors centre opened in Minoru Park in March almost two years after it was originally supposed to open, but the aquatic centre in the same complex remains closed – and probably won’t open until September — after a crack was found in the lap pool.

About 10 months after the crack was found in the pool, it was determined the insurance company of the contractor, Stuart Olson, would pay for the repairs, and construction is expected to be underway before the end of 2019.

Despite several requests, the Richmond News has received little information on the near-two-year delay in construction and the reasons for the pool crack, despite two separate freedom-of-information requests to the city.

The News is asking the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner to review the city’s denial of information.

The Minoru Centre for Active Living includes the seniors centre, the aquatic centre, a fitness centre – which should open in January – and rooms for sports users.

The aquatic centre includes two 25-metre pools, a leisure pool, two hot pools and a cold-plunge pool.

The seniors centre includes a lounge, activity rooms, an art studio, woodworking shop, billiards/games room, multi-purpose rooms and a restaurant with affordable meals.
