Year in Review – July:
It’s just stripes of coloured paint across Minoru Boulevard — but for the LGBTQ community, it symbolizes acceptance.
For some in the community, a proposed rainbow crosswalk caused angst with calls to not draw attention to issues that would cause disharmony and to not waste the $15,000 earmarked for the project.
The crosswalk was proposed as part of Pride Week, but when the item was before council, chambers were full — mainly of those opposing the crosswalk, with a few people speaking in favour of it.
In the end, Richmond council voted to paint the crosswalk to symbolize its support for the LGBTQ community — only Coun. Chak Au voted against it.
