A police takedown of what appeared to be a man waving around kitchen knives at a busy intersection has been praised by an eyewitness.

Richmond Mounties were called into action around 5:40 p.m. Wednesday outside the Chevron gas station at No. 3 and Blundell roads, where their attention was drawn to a man apparently waving around one or two kitchen knives.

Chad Pederson, who was driving home from work at the time, said he was passed by three police cars as he approached the intersection from the east.

On arrival at the intersection, the traffic had ground to a halt and Pederson said he could see the man waving the knives around.

“The police had surrounded him and were ordering him to ground, none had their guns drawn,” he said.

“He started going down but then he popped back up. The officers got closer but I think he turned one of the blades on himself.

“One of the officers managed to get hold of his hands and restrain him. It was all over in less than a minute and was handled very efficiently, it was very quick.”

Richmond RCMP confirmed the incident took place but added that it wasn’t proceeding as a criminal matter.
