Whistler celebrates 300-year old Chinese tradition with Ice Kingdom

After heavy rains pushed back its grand opening, Ice Kingdom Whistler is ready to launch on Feb. 15.

After heavy rains pushed back its grand opening, Ice Kingdom Whistler is ready to launch on Feb. 15.

The 50-attraction frozen kingdom celebrates a 300-year old Chinese tradition of bringing friends and family together to create sculptures out of snow and ice. Master carver David Xu Rui’s creation is rooted in family values as parents would carve toys for their children to keep them occupied during the long winters and have competitions with other families to display the most intricate pieces of art.

According to the attraction’s website, it “uses only the elements to create a winter wonderland,” offering immersive activities like a snow maze and slide. After sunset, the Ice Kingdom is lit up and food vendors will be on site.

The attraction will be open from Feb. 15 to March 31, Wednesday to Sundays. For more information and to buy tickets, visit www.icekingdom.ca.
