Vote for your favourite 2016 street banner

Public has opportunity online to choose popular street art
Banners 2015
Three of the near 300 entries for this year’s street banner contest, two of which will be chosen by the public to be displayed around Richmond. Photos submitted. Oct. 2015.

What do you think of those street banners that festoon the lamp posts around the city?

Well, you now have the chance to fashion some of the public-submitted designs that will actually be displayed around Richmond.

As part of the City of Richmond’s 23rd annual Street Banner Contest, which has just closed after receiving almost 300 entries, the city is now looking to the public to vote for two of their favourite street banner designs in 2016.

For the third year in a row, the community will be invited to view this year’s submissions on the City of Richmond’s Facebook page (Facebook.com/CityofRichmondBC) from Oct. 1 to 16.

The public is encouraged to vote by “liking” their favourite designs and the two entries that receive the most “likes” will be produced into street banners.

After the online voting is complete, eight additional designs will be chosen by a community volunteer panel.

Street banner contest winners will be officially announced at a special unveiling ceremony at a city council meeting in March 2016.

This year’s submissions included a broad range of visual art forms — photography, digital art, painting, illustration, printmaking and mixed media collage.

Submissions were categorized into six themes which reflect upon the places, activities and experiences that make Richmond unique through the eyes of the community.

Complete contest rules and guidelines are online at Richmond.ca/Banners.

More than 1,000 street banners will be produced featuring the winning images. They will be installed on street light poles to enhance the city’s spirit and beautify the downtown core and gateways from March 2016 to March 2017.

Richmond’s street banner contest is a part of the broader Partners for Beautification Program, which invites community members to become actively involved in the beautification of Richmond.

More information on this program is online at Richmond.ca/parks/about/beautification.
