It’s the annual sign from above of the weather changing here in Richmond and the Lower Mainland.

A couple of weeks ago, we were basking in record-breaking temperatures for Thanksgiving long weekend.

But on Tuesday, we witnessed the arrival of our feathered friends from the north – the snow geese.

Richmond landscaper Don Pitcairn marvelled as hundreds of them descended onto the playing fields at Grauer elementary, close to Blundell Road and Railway Avenue.

And he said, as far as his eye could see, hundreds more were circling to make their landings, usually onto one of Richmond’s many sports fields.

The lesser snow goose, as the breed is officially called, breeds in Wrangel Island, Siberia and in the fall migrates down the Pacific coast of North America to spend the winter in food-rich river estuaries in southern B.C., Washington State and northern California.
