Video: Suspected armed home invasion in Richmond thwarted

Homeowner slammed door as armed men waited around the corner of house

Richmond Mounties are warning the public to be aware of who’s knocking on their door after what appears to be an attempted, armed home invasion.

The RCMP has released security footage of a group of suspects believed to be behind the incident in the 4000-block of Blair Drive — just northwest of Shell Road and Alderbridge Way — about 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 6.

Police said the four suspects appeared to be planning to enter the residence by force, with two of them at the front door and two waiting around the corner armed with what appears to be a shot gun and an assault rifle.

All four, say police, appeared to be dressed in gray or light coloured hoodies and gray sweat pants. Two were wearing light coloured caps and facemasks.

Do you know this man? Police believe the pair were about to commit a home invasion.

“The potential for serious injury was real and we are very concerned,” said Cpl. Dennis Hwang, Richmond RCMP’s media relations officer.

“The home owner in this incident was very conscious of what was about to happen, slammed the door quickly, and called police. The home owner’s actions may have prevented serious injury.”

Police are hoping someone may be able to identity one of the suspects, who appears to be Caucasian, with dark brown straight hair, in his late teens or early twenties, of medium build, possibly 178 cm (5’10”) or taller.

If you recognize any of the suspects or have any information about this crime, contact police immediately.

The Richmond RCMP Serious Crimes Unit has been tasked with case and is following a number of leads.

Though police don’t believe this was a random occurrence, the homeowner has been cooperative with police.

Richmond RCMP is recommending the following precautions:
* Report suspicious persons, vehicles, or activity to the police immediately;

* Be aware of persons wearing hoodies, headgear, sunglasses or utilizing other methods to conceal their identity while approaching you or your home;

* Never open your door for people you do not recognize or people that are unable to produce proper identification;

* Utilize the emergency alarm if your home is equipped with a security system.
