Video: Richmond resident sends warning after porch pirate strikes

Someone was at home when the brazen thief cycled up to the property near No. 3 and Williams roads on Saturday late afternoon

A Richmond resident is warning people to take more care with how their packages are delivered – after seeing on camera a cycling thief taking off with one of his.

Phil Goulet’s security camera footage showed the thief casually cycling into his driveway near No. 3 and Williams roads on Saturday around 5 p.m.

The video shows the thief grabbing the package, which included earbuds and cooling fans for a printer, from behind a pillar near his front door.

What makes the theft even more brazen is the fact that someone was home at the time, with a vehicle parked in the driveway.

And, considering he’s caught suspicious activity on camera several times in the last year, Goulet wants people in and around his neighbourhood to tighten their security measures, if possible.

“I'd like to get the thief's picture put out there to raise awareness and hopefully get him to rethink his choices,” Goulet told the Richmond News on Monday.

“We love living in Richmond, it's a small town feel with big city amenities, and we think it's very safe compared to other nearby cities.”

If you are getting a package delivered from the likes of Amazon, you can request to have the delivery driver ring the doorbell or knock the door.

If you’re not going to be at home when the package is due, arrange for it to be dropped at a neighbour’s or friend’s house.

Alternatively, many online retailers allow you to have the package dropped off at a post office.

Goulet, who has reported the theft to the RCMP, said he has since been looking for a lock box for packages to be dropped off to avoid Saturday’s theft happening again.
