Newly elected MP Kenny Chiu was careful to keep his travel plans under wraps until he arrived in Hong Kong late last week to help monitor district elections with a group of international parliamentarians.

As part of the Election Observation Mission, Chiu was joined by other elected officials from several Western countries to monitor Hong Kong elections, taking place in a highly charged atmosphere of months-long protests against Hong Kong’s administration.

Chiu, who was elected in Steveston-Richmond East in October, told the Richmond News he was concerned about his security and whether he’d be let into Hong Kong if the reason he was going there was publicized before his departure.

Chiu said with a lot of people from Hong Kong living in Richmond, there is concern over recent events there.

He was the only Canadian invited on the mission.

Results from the election show more than 70 per cent of registered voters cast a ballot and elected 17 pro-democratic councils out of the 18 district councils. This tripled their seats from 124 to 389.

The mission included parliamentarians from the United Kingdom, Latvia and Germany as well as other Western countries.
