Video: Former east Richmond grocery store comes down

Goodbye PriceSmart Foods...
East Richmond demolition
East Richmond's former PriceSmart Foods has come down.

The demolition of east Richmond’s former grocery store began early this week.

Hamilton’s previous PriceSmart Foods building has transformed into a pile of lumber at Bridgeview Shopping Centre on Gilley Road, close to Westminster Highway.

Locals shared their thoughts about the scene on a Facebook community page.

One resident said they felt their “house shook” as a bulldozer tore through the building, while another commented “Finally!”

In early 2021, locals also took to social media to share their fondest memories of the centre’s popular Lois Lanes Cosmic Bowling when it was demolished.

The buildings were demolished to make way for 225 residential units in two towers, with shops below in 2,415 square feet of retail space.

Of the 225 residential units, five per cent – 15 units – will be allocated to affordable housing units under the city’s former Affordable Housing Strategy – new developments have a 10-per-cent affordable housing requirement.

According to the project proposal, there will be also be an outdoor market square between the two proposed buildings which will include an outdoor seating area and space for public art.
