At least four fire trucks were called to a condo building near Garden City and Lansdowne roads after a blaze ripped through the rooftop on Friday afternoon.

At around 2 p.m., heavy black smoke was seen billowing out of a building on the 5500 block of Arcadia Road, and fire crew, ambulance and the police arrived on the scene shortly after, according to witnesses.

Fire chief Tim Wilkinson told the Richmond News there were no injuries at this time. Fire crews were still working on the scene an hour after they arrived.

Remington Hall was one of the first witnesses to report the fire, which he noticed while driving pass the building.

“I went through the courtyard inside to check it out. It’s a unit three floors up; the fire started taking over the whole unit and the ceiling started burning. The rest were just smoking pretty bad. The whole deck area was completely in flames,” Hall told the News.

“I didn’t see people in the unit. I went to bang on some of the doors on the ground level and people were coming out. [Fire crews] got here pretty fast.”

Michael Fogel, a resident of the building, told the News that he and his wife were at home when they heard the alarm go off.

“There have been so many alarms in this building, you never know if it’s a fire or just another false alarm. I thought it was another false alarm until the police came and brought us out,” said Fogel.

He said most of people living in the building are condo owners.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
