Vandalism in Richmond shows 'sign' of an unhappy cyclist

It appears someone doesn’t like the idea of having to get off their bike while negotiating the eastern most section of Steveston boardwalk.

Last Thursday, a City of Richmond clean-up crew spent the best part of the day removing whitewash from several signs that call for cyclists to dismount while using the boardwalk. A local resident, who only wanted to be identified as Randy, said he spotted at least three signs that had been blanked about by what appeared to be white paint.

He said the signs — from the parking lot at Britannia Heritage Shipyards all the way to the bridge at Pheonix Pond — were targeted.

“This is dangerous and it’s pure vandalism,” he added. “The signs are there, not just to stop (pedestrians and cyclists colliding), but also because cyclists get their bike’s tires stuck in the grooves on the boardwalk.

“I walk along there every day and, if there is an issue with cyclists, it’s usually on the bridge (at the pond).”

City spokesperson Ted Townsend confirmed that three “please dismount signs” appeared to have been whitewashed by “persons unknown.”

“City crews power-washed off the covering paint to return them to normal.”
