Two male pedestrians were struck separately while crossing the street in marked crosswalks within an hour of each other Tuesday (March 27) night.

Both men were treated at Richmond Hospital for minor injuries.

The first incident occurred shortly after 9 p.m. at Bridgeport Road and Sweden Way. A 27-year-old man was hit by a southbound vehicle on Sweden Way, turning onto Bridgeport Road. The driver failed to stop due to a combination of wet, slippery road conditions and the dark clothing of the man. The victim has since been released from hospital, while the driver received a ticket for failing to yield to a pedestrian.

The second incident occurred just before to 10 p.m. at Minoru Boulevard and Blundell Road. A vehicle turning onto Minoru Boulevard struck a 17-year-old male. The driver apparently didnt see the pedestrian, who was also dressed in black. Charges were not laid in this incident.

Richmond RCMP would like to remind drivers to be extra cautious in dim light and to reduce speeds when traveling on wet or slippery roadways. At the same time, pedestrians need to wear light-coloured, reflective clothing in dim light and should make eye contact with drivers to determine whether or not they have been seen. Pedestrians should never assume they will safely make it across the street just because they are in a marked crosswalk.
