Richmond backyard fire caused rush hour traffic delay

Dry temperatures and high winds added to the fire, says Richmond Fire Chief.

Burning trees and sheds in the backyard of a Bridgeport home caused traffic delays early Tuesday morning.

Richmond Fire-Rescue crew received a call shortly after 4:30 a.m. about trees on fire near Beckwith and Gage roads, just behind Costco.

Fire chief Jim Wishlove said firefighters arrived to find the trees and “a bit more material behind the house” on fire.

It turned out two sheds were also ablaze.

“Because of how big the block was, we had to move a few trucks over onto Bridgeport (Road) to get attached to the hydrant in order to get water,” said Wishlove, adding one of the lanes on the road was closed between 5:30 and 7:30 a.m.

“When we got back there, we found there’s a bunch of really old little sheds in the back of the yard, which were almost directly under the Oak Street Bridge.”

As for the trees and bushes in the area, Wishlove said they were “burnt quite badly” due to the dry temperatures and winds that spread the fire from one tree to another.

He thanked the community for calling in quickly and reporting the sight or smell of fire.

“If we hadn’t gotten that call as early as we did, it could have spread significantly faster,” said Wishlove.

No injuries were reported from the incident.
