Parm Bains

Party: Liberal Party of Canada

Occupation: University Instructor

Bio: I’m a lifelong resident of Richmond who is deeply active within the local community.

Having served as a public and media relations officer with the government of British Columbia, and now as a university lecturer, I have over 17 years of progressive experience in corporate communications, public and stakeholder engagement, and policy development.

I know how to get things done around here.

My accomplishments extend across several initiatives for education, business, mental health and addictions, at-risk youth, public safety, seniors and sport.

The sooner we end the fight against COVID-19, the sooner we can begin our economic recovery — which is my absolute priority for Steveston-Richmond East.

I encourage everyone who hasn’t been vaccinated yet to do so.

I know our bold plans to invest in affordable housing, senior facilities and cutting child care costs in half by next year will be a direct benefit for us in Steveston-Richmond East.

Past outstanding achievement: Community Service Award (B.C. Government), Premier’s Innovation Award (B.C. Government), Influential Community Activist (Vancouver Sun)

Kenny Chiu

Party: Conservative

Occupation: Software development manager

Bio: Conservative Party candidate Kenny Chiu has been a Richmond community advocate for over 25 years. Using his experiences as a Richmond School Trustee, Richmond Rotarian and senior software development manager, Kenny has been hard at work fighting in Ottawa as your member of Parliament. He immigrated to Canada from Hong Kong in 1989, and he remains proud that Canada is the only country he’s held citizenship in.

As vice-chair of the House of Commons Subcommittee on International Human Rights, Kenny has fought unrelentingly for the rights of oppressed people. As Shadow Minister for Diversity, Inclusion, and Youth, Kenny has concerned himself with combatting racism, protecting sexual minorities, consulting young people, and building a more inclusive Canada that benefits all. Kenny has been married for over 25 years, and is the father of two daughters born and raised in Richmond.

Top priorities for Richmond: Fighting foreign influence in our government, standing against the Liberal promotion of illegal drugs, combatting the growing problem of gang violence, and supporting infrastructure projects and local fisheries are among Kenny’s top priorities for Richmond.

Past outstanding achievement: His achievements as MP include: being selected as Shadow Minister, tabling Bill C-282 in the House of Commons to combat foreign influence, and being named Chair of the Canada-Hong Kong Parliamentary friendship group.

Françoise Raunet

Party: Green Party

Occupation: Teacher

Bio: Françoise Raunet has spent decades advocating for healthy ecosystems, peace, and electoral and economic reform. Her frustration with government inaction and toxic partisanship drove her into politics.

A teacher and community builder, Françoise believes in bringing people together to solve their common problems, and she will work as an MP to transition to a post-carbon economy, strengthen democratic institutions, and reduce economic and social inequality.

Having grown up in Vancouver and lived overseas, Françoise speaks French and English fluently, and has conversational Spanish and Mandarin.

Top priorities for Richmond:

- building more public housing and placing limits on speculative real estate investment

- protecting and rehabilitating local ecosystems

- building climate-resilient infrastructure (energy grids, sewers, etc.)

- community-based economic networks (supporting local businesses over multinational corporations)

- better public transportation networks (more frequent, greater area coverage)

- electoral & political reform (proportional representation, limits on lobbying & campaign financing)

- ensuring local food supplies by protecting farmland and reducing barriers for farmers to enter the profession

Past outstanding achievement: Françoise completed her MA in International Studies at SFU in 2009; focusing on complex emergencies and China’s role in African economic development.

Jennifer Singh

Party: People’s Party of Canada

Bio: My international career experience covers the fields of civil and structural engineering as a trained technologist, applying my skillset to business development, strategic planning and corporate compliance. All of the projects in which I participated were executed successfully, under budget, and completed before the due date.

During a career now spanning more than 19 years, I have managed multi-million dollar major projects for BC Hydro and Telus. In Australia, I worked with the general contractor on a 116 single-detached student housing project for a university. And I was vice-president for a start-up mining company in Mongolia for a year.

Decades of experience managing teams in diverse and difficult industries in trying conditions means I'm prepared to be an effective member of Parliament.

Jack Trovato

Party: NDP (New Democratic Party)

Occupation: Teacher

Bio: Jack Trovato is a well-respected educator and community advocate.

He has spearheaded the petition campaign to restrict house sizes on farmland, the petition to approve the Acute Care Tower at Richmond Hospital, the petition calling on the B.C. government to initiate an independent public inquiry into money laundering, drug trafficking, and profiteering in our real estate economy.

As our next MP, he’ll work alongside Jagmeet Singh to invest in affordable housing, healthcare, small business, and green infrastructure while creating quality jobs for Canadians as we recover from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Jack Trovato hails from Argentina, having immigrated to Canada with his family as a small child.

He grew up in Richmond and raised his daughter here. A proud Richmond resident for over 40 years, Jack holds a deep appreciation for our community’s rich cultural diversity.

Jack has a proven track record of community advocacy — making Richmond a better place. Now he’s ready to take the next step for our community — as a strong voice for our priorities in Ottawa.

Top priorities for Richmond:

Affordable housing and green infrastructure to combat climate change.
