A networking social night is being held in Steveston next week to celebrate Black History Month (BHM).
The informal gathering is taking place on Sunday, Feb. 19 at the Little Mexico Cantina on Chatham Street.
The event, which goes from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., has been organized to help people in the local Black community make, among other things, more connections.
One of the organizers, Steveston’s Debbie Hertha, said it has not been easy to get such events up and running, so it’s “wonderful” to be able to be a part of this one.
“It’s about really trying to connect people to swap stories, get some practical advice, meet new people,” said Hertha, who is organizing the event along with Mary Wilson.
“Our (BHM) events have previously been intentionally educational and there’s not been an opportunity to sit down and network with people and get to know them properly.
“So we’re starting it off with something very simple and the Mexican Cantina has been great.”
Hertha said she and her husband, who runs a sausage deli in Steveston, “are always looking for more ways to create community in a welcoming environment.”
“So this very informal mix and mingle is just perfect.
“I have a friend that just moved from Africa last April who doesn’t really know anyone, so I’m hoping she can come along and connect with people also.”
Anyone interested in attending should email [email protected] , indicating how many people are coming, or call 604 275 4139 and leave a message with details of who is coming.
