Singer has stars in her eyes

Larasati, 9, admits nerves about PNE performance

Get your judging caps on because this year's Star Showdown final is going down at the Pacific National Exhibition (PNE) this weekend with a little Richmond flair.

In the Kids Division, Richmond's own Larasati Maranda, 9, will be showing off her singing skills at the Central Park West Jet concert stage on Aug. 21.

Maranda said she's a little nervous to perform, but if she wants to be a star she's going to have to get used to it.

"I think this is the biggest crowd I've ever had of people I'm going to perform in front of," Maranda said.

Singing since she was five years old, Maranda has performed in a number of festivals already, including the Richmond Music Festival.

All those shows went "great" she said, and it's all working towards her bigger goal of becoming a fashion designer - with some singing on the side.

"My parents always say to start from a small career," Maranda said.

Music runs in the blood of this family as her sister has joined her on stage for many duets before.

Her mother, Heny Maranda, is also a singer. Currently studying for her masters in UBC's opera program, Heny has been coach and mentor for both of her daughters since the beginning.

She said if Larasati does well, that's all that matters.

"For us, for her to sing the best she can and the audience like her, is all that we can ask for," Heny said.

If you would like to watch her perfomrance, get to the PNE on Sunday, Aug. 21 between 1: 30 and 2: 30 p.m. for the Star Showdown's semi-finals.

If Larasati is successful, she could advance as a finalist the next day.
