An 80-year-old pedestrian, who was struck by a vehicle in Richmond last Saturday, has become the city’s first vehicle-related fatality of 2015.

Police were called to the intersection of Cambie and Garden City roads just after 8 p.m. on Jan. 31 after reports of a pedestrian being hit.

The man, a Delta resident, was rushed to Vancouver General Hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries Monday morning. His name is not being released out of respect for the family.

The 31-year-old driver of the vehicle, a Richmond resident, that struck the man initially left the scene of the collision, but returned and has cooperated with police. Speed and alcohol were not factors in the collision.

The Richmond RCMP Roadside Safety Unit is actively investigating.

“When crossing the street, use designated crosswalks and make positive eye contact with drivers before crossing the street,” said Richmond RCMP acting corporal Dennis Hwang.

“And avoid any distractions like cell phones or listening to music. Be active and alert.”

Any witnesses to the accident are asked to contact Const. Jimm Janson at 604-278-1212. To leave a tip on this crime or any other, email [email protected] or to remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
