Second COVID-19 exposure event reported in one week for Shas Ti-Kelly Road Secondary

For a second time in four days, a Prince George high school has been alerted for another COVID-19 exposure event.

Today (Feb. 4), Northern Health listed Jan. 28-29, 2021, as the new possible dates Shas Ti-Kelly Road Secondary students and staff may have come into contact with someone who recently tested positive for the virus.

The School District 57 (SD57) institution was last warned of exposure on Monday (Feb. 1) for Jan. 25-27, 2021.

This is now the fourth time Shas Ti-Kelly Road has been notified since students returned to the classroom; the other two dates were Nov. 30-Dec. 2, 2020, and Dec. 7-11, 2020.

Since COVID-19 reached the region, 19 Prince George-based schools have experienced at least one exposure event, including 16 SD57 members and three independent or private schools.

Northern Health's school-exposure section explains students should still go to school "if you do not receive a phone call or letter from Public Health," but you're also encouraged to monitor symptoms daily.

• Contact tracing is initiated to determine how the individual was infected and who they were in close contact with
• We identify and notify close contacts who may be at an increased risk, and advise them to self-isolate and monitor for symptoms for 14 days
• Only Public Health can determine who is a close contact
  • Learning groups, friends or other connections may not be determined to be a close contact
• Public Health staff works closely with the school and school district throughout the case and contact management process to maintain close communication with the school community

As of this publication, Northern Health has found 3,610 lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19 across the region since March last year, including 85 deaths.

There are currently 16 people admitted into critical care or ICU among 20 total hospitalizations, 397 active infections and 3,115 recoveries.
