Sea Island elementary will still be closed as a K-3 school this fall, but there will be no school closure process - which would include public consultation - because adult education programs are still being offered in the building.
The Richmond School District clarified in a statement there will be no primary classes at the school due to “extremely low enrolment.”
But, according to the School Act, the school is not technically closed because it is still offering educational programs – continuing and adult education with about 300 part-time students registered in its programs this year.
Last spring, the board of education decided to close the primary program because there were only 13 students registered at the school, eliciting a loud outcry from the Burkeville community.
No decision has been made about the future of the school, according to the school district statement.
If the board decides to move forward with permanently closing the school, it would have to go through a formal school closure process, which would include public consultation.
