Yogi, the Rottweiler dog that sent a young woman to hospital in critical condition last December, will be destroyed by the City of Richmond, after its owner surrendered possession of him on Tuesday.
“The owner has dropped opposition to our application” to destroy Yogi, said city spokesperson Ted Townsend.
“We are trying to arrange an opportunity for the owner to visit the dog before we proceed with destruction,” said Townsend, who added no date has been set.
The owner, Lucas MacNeil, 21, had previously sought legal advice to save the dog.
Yogi had mauled MacNeil’s girlfriend, Kati Mather, in South Arm Park, sending her to Vancouver General Hospital with over 100 bite wounds, according to Richmond RCMP.
MacNeil did not respond to inquiries from the Richmond News. He surrendered possession of the dog on Tuesday, just prior to his first court appearance.
A lengthy court battle between the city and two Rottweilers in 2014 ended up costing the defendant, Navdeep Nijjer, about $20,000, according to a court document related to the case.
