Richmond COVID-19 cases have been on an upward trajectory for the past few weeks.

BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) data show 57 new cases in the past week (Aug. 8 to 14) in Richmond, up from 47 the previous week.

Just two weeks ago, BCCDC data showed 21 new cases in Richmond.

This mirrors growing numbers across the province.

On Thursday, the provincial government reported there were 689 new cases of COVID-19 in B.C. in the past 24 hours. Over the weekend, this number was in the 400s, but it has been going up all week.

Hotspots of COVID-19 have been found in the Interior recently, but Thursday’s data showed a significant number in Fraser Health as well as the Interior.

There were 121 people in hospital with COVID-19 as of Thursday with 56 in intensive care.

While across the U.S., it’s widely reported that those ending up in hospital are unvaccinated, B.C. reports this data a few weeks after the fact.

However, the trend earlier this summer was clear that it is the unvaccinated who have been fuelling new infections and hospitalizations.

One-dose vaccination rates in Richmond, of those 12 years old and older, are well over 80 per cent and the seven areas in the city, as broken down by the BCCDC, report between 73 and 82 per cent have received two doses of the vaccine.

Vaccinations rates are the highest in Steveston where 88 per cent have one dose and 82 per cent have two doses.

The one-dose rate in Broadmoor and Blundell areas is at 81 per cent.

Across the province, 82.9 per cent of the population has got one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine while 74 per cent are double-vaccinated – these percentages are for those aged 12 and older.
