Richmond’s Patrick Metcalfe had an eventful 14 minutes when he came off the bench Saturday for the Vancouver Whitecaps’ 1-0 win over Dallas.

With the ‘Caps holding onto the slender one-goal lead deep into injury time, Dallas swung in a hopeful cross to the far post where Metcalfe jumped along with a rival player.

In doing so, 22-year-old Metcalfe’s arm strayed across the shoulder and face of Dallas’ Jader Obrian, who crashed to the ground.

After a few tense minutes of protestations and deliberations from the referee, who went to the VAR screen to check the incident, a penalty was awarded.

However, there were fewer people as happy and relieved as Metcalfe when the resultant spot kick was well saved by Whitecaps’ keeper Max Crépeau to secure the home side’s victory.

The win was vital for the ‘Caps, who are in ninth place on goal difference in the MLS western conference, one spot below the play-offs, but with a game in hand over nearest rival LAFC.
