Richmond firefighters say they will be more safe while battling fires with a new stock of self-contained breathing apparatuses.
Richmond Fire Rescue recently secured the purchase of 62 new air packs and face masks at a cost of $633,000.
The department's inventory of 110 air packs is at the end of its life cycle, according to a report from deputy fire chief Tim Wilkinson. The department had already retrofitted the existing apparatuses three times over the last 10 years, he noted.
The department saved $43,000 by selling off the old equipment.
