A Richmond woman has become the first ever winner of the Black Business Association of BC’s (BBABC) Small Business of the Year.

La Toya Barrington was named the winner at an awards ceremony at a hotel in Surrey last week.

Barrington started her cleaning business Go2Girl Services in Richmond a decade ago and has won multiple awards during that journey.

She said she was “truly honoured” to be recognized, but directed much of the praise towards her team and the local community for their support.

Award winner considered giving up

“I remember all of the times that I was advised to let go of being an entrepreneur and get a 'real' job,” Barrington told the Richmond News.

“There were so many times that I considered giving up, but with the support of my team and the strength of my community, I was able to persevere.”

Barrington, who has 11 employees and offers everything from home and business cleaning to wedding clear-ups, added that she was “overwhelmed with gratitude to be recognized and considered for such a prestigious award.”

The awards are a celebration and acknowledgement of Black entrepreneurs and businesses in B.C.
