A 61-year-old woman from Richmond has died after being involved in a head-on collision in the Massey Tunnel in the early hours of Wednesday.

Police reported how, just after midnight on Sept. 2, a vehicle travelling southbound on Highway 99 crossed the centre line inside the tunnel, colliding with an oncoming vehicle.

The Richmond woman driving the northbound died in the crash.  The passenger in her vehicle and the driver of the vehicle that crossed the centre line have been taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The woman who died has not yet been named.

Staff Sgt. Quentin Frewing, of the Lower Mainland Traffic Services, said “Alcohol may be a factor in the crash however the investigation is in the early stages, and all possible factors are being considered.”

Frewing asks that anyone who may have dash camera footage or may have been a witness and has not spoken to police to call as soon as possible.

The incident had the tunnel closed for seven hours.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Const. Lee Sandau at 604-970-8691.
