Richmond voters have several ways to cast ballots

Advance polls will be held from Sept. 10 to 13 and general voting day is Sept. 20.

Richmond voters can cast their ballots in the federal election on general voting day or take part in four advance polls – or apply for a mail-in ballot.

In Richmond, polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on general voting day, Monday, Sept. 20.

Advance polls will be held on four consecutive days – Sept. 10, 11, 12 and 13 – and will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

But, unlike in the provincial election where voters could vote at any advance poll, voters have to go to their assigned polling station in the federal election. Polling stations are listed on each voter card, which should be popping through mail slots this week.

If you don’t receive a voter card, you are not on the federal voting list.

To register to vote, go online to Elections.ca or visit your local elections office. (See below for Richmond Centre and Steveston-Richmond East Elections Canada offices.)

In addition, it’s possible to vote during office hours at your local elections office up until 6 p.m. on Sept. 14.

Vote by mail

Those who want to vote by mail need to go through a two-step process: apply to vote by mail and then mail in the ballot that arrives by post.

Voters can apply to vote by mail either online or at their elections office. Identification is needed – it will have to be scanned and attached if applying online.

The “Vote by Mail” button is on the Elections.ca home page.

The ballot will then be sent in the mail with a prepaid envelope.

Mail-in ballots can also be dropped off on election day – not on advance polling days – at voting stations.

If someone is picking up a ballot for another voter at an Elections Canada office, they will have to bring that person’s identification.

Elections officials have contacted administrators at various Richmond facilities, like homeless shelters and long-term care homes, to see if they want a mobile voting station to come to the facility.

Posters will be sent out to these facilities about when and where the mobile elections team will be on site.
