The City of Richmond unveiled the new street banner collection at city hall Monday night.

Ten winning banners were selected - by a volunteer judging panel and the public out of almost 200 entries this year - to beautify the city’s streetscapes.

“The annual Street Banner Contest provides residents an opportunity to become more involved with the beautification of their city,” said Mayor Malcolm Brodie.

Richmond resident Eugene Hernandez, an amateur photographer, had three pictures chosen – the first time one person has had three selected.

“I’m very excited,” said Hernandez to the Richmond News

“The best (thing) is going out and walking around, enjoying the city. It’s actually a lot different when you look at the world using photography.”

One of the winning designs, by Crystal Chan, celebrates the spirit of a fast-paced city through an array of light captured at an intersection.

Chan said that, to her, the design highlights how far we’ve come as a community and that the streaks of light remind her of the people who work to keep the city running, no matter what.

More than 1,200 street banners are produced for the city and will remain on display until early 2019.

Beginning April 2, last year’s banners will be available for purchase from the Community Services Division reception at 5599 Lynas Lane.
