A team of Richmond students is heading to Ontario for the national trivia championships this weekend.

Seven students from McMath secondary's trivia club will be competing at the Canadian High School Consensus Trivia competition from May 24 to 25 in Ottawa.

Max Mori, one of two captains of the team, said members of the club from McMath haven't made it to nationals since 2015.

The team placed first out of 20 teams in the Vancouver provincial tournament in March, qualifying them for the national competition.

"We feel excited to be able to compete nationally, and we feel proud of what we've done," said Mori.

"We also know there are a lot of areas that we could improve on, and we are trying to keep our hopes in check for battling it out against the Ontario teams."

Mori told the Richmond News that "all the best" teams competing are from Ontario, while highlighting that most of the teams competing are from the province.

"We're hoping we can add some West Coast competition to it," he added.

Their team is the only team from B.C. competing in nationals.

Because the team's participation in the competition is not a sanctioned school event, the McMath students will be competing under the name Steveston Trivia, explained Mori.

He added that they've had the privilege of being awarded sponsorships by local businesses, including Richmond's Brittania Brewing Co. and Shafik Ladha Real Estate, to help pay for flights and accommodations.

The players were also awarded certificates on their achievements on May 20 by Richmond-Steveston MLA Kelly Greene on behalf of the province.

Mori said their main goal is to place within the top five teams, but also to experience Ottawa.

“The most important thing for us is to have fun, honestly," he said.

“Most of us have never been to Ottawa, so it’s exciting for us.”
