A UBC student from Richmond is part of a team which has launched a start-up product made out of recycled glass bottles.

Michael Jin is one of nearly two dozen people in the all-student team behind “Mosa,” which collects discarded glass bottles from local bars and restaurants and then, through an innovative upcycling process at its microfactory, creates a line of handcrafted home decor products.

The student-led start-up has already diverted over 6,000 glass bottles from the landfill before upcycling them into the frosted décor.

How the initiative works is that students collect disposed glass bottles across the city of Vancouver that would have otherwise gone to landfills.

These bottles are then upcycled in-house in Mosa’s microfactory and then handcrafted into modern, functional, and elegant home decor products.

The Mosa team designs and crafts each product to create a like-new item.

Raw glass manufacturing produces at least 86 million tonnes of carbon dioxide each year.
