A Richmond youth soccer coach has been charged with two counts of assault following complaints about abusive and bullying behaviour.

In a statement issued on Thursday, B.C. Soccer announced that former Richmond FC coach Roberto Sciascia was being “suspended immediately and indefinitely from all soccer related activities.”

Sciascia’s suspension was connected to a court appearance last week, the statement said.

Sciascia had been the subject of complaints from some players and parents.

The announcement from B.C. Soccer said the decision to suspend Sciascia “is prompted by the formal charges being pursued against Mr. Sciascia as a result of the March 31 court date.”

B.C.’s online court registry shows Sciascia is due in court again later this month, but details of the case are subject to a publication ban.

On Saturday, Richmond FC released their own statement, saying: “Richmond FC removed Mr. Sciascia from any soccer related activities once learning that formal charges were made against him ... Richmond FC will make no further public comment on this matter until legal and disciplinary proceedings related to this matter have been completed.”
