Maple Lane elementary students joined more than 2,000 others from eight schools across the Lower Mainland in a flash mob at a Giants hockey game in the Pacific Coliseum Sunday afternoon.
The students took over the north end upper deck of the arena to wear pink T-shirts and dance to One Directions What Makes You Beautiful in an effort to promote Pink Shirt Day on Feb. 27.
The event was the idea of Mette Hamaguchi, principal at David Lloyd George in Vancouver, who did a flash mob with her students at the Oakridge Shopping Centre two years ago.
This time, Hamaguchi gave the song choice to two ex-Churchill secondary grads who created dance moves with the dance teacher at Eric Hamber secondary, Edna James. The moves were sent to all participating schools in November when they began practicing. Sunday was the first time all students performed together.
Participating in the event is part of the anti-bullying initiative incorporated at Maple Lane.
