The Minister of Education is coming to Richmond on Monday to talk about “school expansions.”

Rachna Singh, Minister of Education and Child Care, will be making an announcement at Samuel Brighouse elementary, a school that has had high enrolment for several years and is earmarked for six more classrooms, according to a facilities report from November.

The school district noted, in addition to Brighouse, William Cook elementary needs five more classrooms.

The 11 “prefabricated modular addition” classrooms at Brighouse and Cook would add more than 270 seats, according to Cindy Wang, secretary treasurer of the Richmond School District.

In a report to the facilities committee this week, school district staff say there has been a “notable increase” in enrolment in city centre elementary schools, with 231 more students - 12 per cent - this September compared to last year.
