Richmond’s Save-on-Foods and other locations in western Canada are suspending bottle returns and the use of reusable shopping bags starting Friday.

All 178 of Save-on-Foods stores will also be giving plastic bags to customers for free during their purchases until further notice to protect the health and safety of staff members, according to a release.

“Both our team members and customers have expressed concern about bottle returns and in using reusable bags at this time and we want to do everything we can put them at ease,” said Darrell Jones, president of Save-On-Foods.

“The health and safety of our team members and customers is our number one priority and we’ll continue to do what’s best for them as this unprecedented situation evolves.”

Save-on-Foods is urging customers to shop normally in-store and leaving delivery services to those who can’t get to the store.

Moving forward, all locations are limiting shopping hours to 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
