Last Friday, Richmond received recognition for its contributions to fighting against the 2017 wildfires in B.C.

Last year’s wildfire season was unprecedented for the province, with over 65,000 residents displaced. According to a letter written to the mayor and councillors, Richmond was recognized for its “commitment to partnership and collaboration with neighbouring municipalities and regions to provide services and a coordinated response during an emergency.”

Richmond was also recognized for its “emergency social services” program which trains Richmond residents to volunteer outside of Richmond during an emergency, if needed.

In total, 390 volunteer hours were provided by Richmond volunteers and emergency program staff at reception centres in 100 Mile House, Kamloops and Chilliwack.
