Richmond RCMP is urging parents to inspect their kids’ Halloween haul after a child accidently ate a cannabis candy last year.
While there was only one reported incident last year, RCMP are issuing a reminder to prevent any other family and child from experiencing this.
There are strict regulations around packing and labelling of cannabis products, but the candy the child ate last year didn’t conform to these regulations, police explained.
“Fortunately, the child did not sustain any permanent injuries, but clearly this was a frightening incident for the family,” said Inspector Michael Cohee, officer-in-charge of Investigative Services and Community Engagement.
Many parents already check Halloween candy, but this adds another “dimension that the community needs to be aware of,” said RCMP communications officer Cpl. Dennis Hwang.
“While you are checking, be mindful to look for the wording THC or Cannabis,” he added. “We would also suggest having a conversation and educating your child on this issue if you feel the subject is age appropriate.”
Richmond RCMP will have extra officers patrolling throughout Richmond on Halloween. They recommend reporting any suspicious incidents involving Halloween candy to the police of jurisdiction.
