An electric police vehicle is cruising around Richmond this week, and more can be coming in the future.

The Tesla Model Y, decked out in RCMP decor, is on loan from West Shore RCMP for Richmond RCMP officers to test drive. West Shore RCMP had purchased the electric vehicle (EV) for its pilot program launched in February this year.

Depending on the feedback from officers and senior management, Richmond RCMP may request to take part in the next phase of the pilot program.

“Whether the next phase will involve a Tesla or another brand of EV, and the configuration (ie. Sedan, SUV or Pickup), has yet to be determined,” said Cpl. Ian Henderson, Richmond RCMP spokesperson.

“So far the public reaction in Richmond has been mostly very positive.”
