Two people bear-sprayed a 26-year-old Richmond resident and struck him several times before fleeing on Thursday night.

The victim was walking along the 7800 block of Elmbridge Way between Alderbridge Way and Minoru Boulevard when “he was approached by two unknown dark-skinned assailants,” said Richmond RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Dennis Hwang.

The assault was reported to police shortly after 1 a.m.

The victim sustained non-life-threatening injuries and police are investigating the incident.

“At this point, this incident appears random with no apparent motive,” said Hwang.

He added that the victim recalled seeing “several” people who might have witnessed the attack but did not intervene.

Anyone with information or potential dash cam footage is asked to contact Richmond RCMP at 604-278-1212 and quote file # 2023-11230.

So far, police have recorded 14 incidents involving the usage of noxious substances (such as bear spray and pepper spray) in 2023. Last year, nine incidents were recorded during the same period.
