Earlier this week, the Richmond News reported on one Stevestonite of Japanese ancestry who would like to see Lord Byng elementary's name changed to reflect local history. He suggested naming the school after Hide Hyodo, a Japanese-Canadian teacher who taught at the school for 16 years before she was sent to an internment camp in 1942 in the Kootenays.

The Richmond Board of Education will be reviewing its facility-naming policy in early 2022.

Richmond News polled 420 Richmond News readers and asked the question: Do you think Richmond school names should be changed to reflect local history?

The poll ran from Dec. 20 to Dec. 23. Of the 420 votes, we can determine that 106 are from within the community. The full results are as follows:

Yes, school names currently aren't relevant 26.42 % local, 34.29 % total
No, school names already reflect local and national history 41.51 % local, 39.05 % total
Some, but not all 32.08 % local, 26.67 % total

Results are based on an online study of adult Richmond News readers that are located in Vancouver. The margin of error - which measures sample variability - is +/- 4.78%, 19 times out of 20.
