The impact of the Sunday's collision on Westminster Highway at Nelson Road can be seen on the 59-year-old driver's car.

Speed and alcohol are being considered as factors after a fatal car crash in east Richmond on the weekend.

Around 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, a 59-year-old woman died after the car she was driving, a grey Chrysler sedan, appeared to strike a hydro pole on Westminster Highway at Nelson Road, before veering off the road.

Richmond RCMP arrived at the scene and the road was closed while the investigation took place. Hydro lines were also down in the area due to the crash.

The lone occupant of the vehicle, a 59-year old female from Delta, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Police say both speed and alcohol are being considered as factors in this collision.

“This was an extremely horrific collision scene to investigate, even by highly seasoned investigators,” said Cpl. Dennis Hwang, of Richmond RCMP.

“We are thankful to the professionalism of the Richmond RCMP Victim Services Unit, Richmond Fire-Rescue, BC Ambulance Service and BC Hydro.

“We are asking the public for any information that might assist us in our investigation.

“For those with dash cams that may have been driving around the area, please review your footage. You may have captured something that would assist our investigation.”
