At least two Richmond MLAs will be seeking re-election if a snap election is called - Jas Johal, MLA for Richmond-Queensborough, and Teresa Wat, MLA for Richmond North-Centre, both confirmed their intentions on Thursday.

There has been widespread talk about a snap provincial election, but when pressed Thursday afternoon, Premier John Horgan wouldn’t confirm if he was going to call one.

However, several NDP MLAs have announced over the past few weeks that they are not seeking another term, for example, Judy Darcy, MLA for New Westminster.

Linda Reid, who has been the MLA for Richmond South Centre for more than 20 years (the riding name has changed during her time in office) is not seeking re-election.

Johal said he will be seeking a second term. He narrowly beat his NDP rival Aman Singh by 263 votes in the 2017 election. Michael Wolfe, who is currently a Richmond city councillor, was third, running for the Green Party.

Wat won her riding handily in 2017, beating BC NDP candidate Lyren Chiu by more than 2,700 votes.

John Yap, MLA for Richmond Steveston, didn’t confirm immediately whether he would be seeking re-election.

More to come…
