A Richmond man is facing charges after police answered an online ad advertising a stolen, “rare” snowboard for sale.

The 38-year-old man, who was not named by police, is facing charges of possession of stolen property, according to West Vancouver police (WVPD).

WVPD said they were made aware of the ad on Dec. 7, 2020 by the snowboard’s owner, who had been hoping to eventually see it turn up for sale online after it was taken from a vehicle on Cypress Mountain nearly two years ago.

The snowboard is “extremely rare and easily identifiable,” according to the owner.

Plain-clothes officers then set up a meeting with the seller in Richmond, on Dec. 16, 2020.

The seller was arrested when the snowboard was “recognized through its unique design,” WVPD said, in a statement.

The snowboard was originally reported stolen to WVPD in February 2019.

“We were very happy to return this property to its rightful owner,” said WVPD’s Const. Kevin Goodmurphy. “It clearly held sentimental value.”

The suspect was later released and will appear in court in March.
