The Richmond Cultural Centre celebrated one of the city's brightest events - the Festival of Lights, known as Diwali last Saturday (Nov. 9).

"Richmond is a community of cultures where we share in enjoying exciting celebrations with our neighbours who hail from around the world," said Mayor Malcolm Brodie.

The family-friendly event featured traditional Indian dance performances, storytelling, yoga, music, children's activities, henna painting, refreshments and an opportunity to connect with neighbours.

Diwali is a five-day festival.

It gets its name from the row of clay lamps (deepa) that Indians light outside their homes

to symbolize the inner light that protects them from spiritual darkness.

The celebration in Richmond was presented by the city, SUCCESS and Richmond Public Library.
