In celebration of TD Canadian Children’s Book Week, the Richmond Public Library is helping to “bring books to life” with a live reading on Monday afternoon.
Tom Ryan, a Nova Scotian children’s book author, is one of 30 Canadian children’s authors, illustrators and storytellers on tour for the children’s book celebration. With more than 400 readings taking place across 175 Canadian communities, the week-long event highlights the importance of reading for children.
Ryan, who writes fiction for teens and young adults, will read from his 2017 release, Pop Quiz, which revolves around a group of young actors on a television show. Ryan says he drew on his own experience in the film industry for the book.
“In my presentation for Canadian Children’s Book Week, I will use clips and images from my visually attractive, but ill-fated filmmaking experience, as well as numerous examples from children’s and (young adult’s) literature, to talk about the fundamental importance of a great story,” Ryan explains on the TD Canadian Children’s Book Week website. “I will detail how the lessons I learned when my movie failed to resonate with its audience, followed me into the world of writing novels for young readers.”
The TD Canadian Children’s Book Week has events across the Lower Mainland between May 5 and May 12. For more information, visit www.bookweek.ca.
Ryan’s visit to Richmond takes place on Monday, May 7 at 1 p.m. at the Brighouse Branch at the Richmond Public Library.
