Earlier this year, the Richmond RCMP went to the Richmond School Board to get local youth involved in naming the detachments new patrol boat. Local elementary students entered the Help Name Our Boat contest in one of two categories a written essay or a drawing.

In March, the local police were inundated with contest entries.

We received a significant amount of quality work from the students in Richmond. It really speaks to the talent and creativity of our youth, said Cst. Veronica Fox of Richmond RCMPs Youth Section and organizer of the contest.

This week, a panel of judges selected the final winning essays and drawings, and the winners were notified through their schools.

The public is also invited on Thursday, May 31 at 4 p.m. at Londons Landing in Steveston, when the winners will be announced and prizes handed out.

The winners will share their winning entries and people will have a chance to get up close to the Richmond RCMP patrol boat, a rigid hull inflatable zodiac. There will also be educational demonstrations related to water safety.
